The Myth of the Lie Detector – Polygraph
The myth of the lie detector (polygraph) is that they don’t work. However, polygraph’s are scientifically proven to be over 90% accurate. The accuracy of the test increases even further when combined with other deception detection techniques by a skilled examiner. The FBI, CIA, DIA, NSA, ICE, DHS, Military and Police all use the polygraph on their own staff as part of the hiring process and/or during investigations. Polygraphs are a routine part of security clearances for government work for civilians as well. With virtually all intelligence & investigative agencies in the US using polygraphs and science backs the exam, why are people still saying they don’t work?
The simplest answer is, people don’t want to believe it. Many people will focus all their attention on the 1%-8% of times the test fails while ignoring the 90%+ times it does works. While it’s very important to be mindful that results aren’t guaranteed, it’s also important to understand that most polygraphs are usually used in conjunction with other investigative techniques. The polygraph is only one piece of the entire investigation. While nothing is 100%, the polygraph exam is one of the absolute best ways to validate truthfulness during an investigation.
